I really wanted to love Barbrix – and to a certain extent I still do. Let me explain. From the moment you step through the door of Barbrix you are surrounded by a warm and classy decor. The alternately white and chocolate colored walls, the espresso wood floors, and the flickering votives all add an understated elegance to the space. In addition to an extensive wine list which includes many wines by the glass, a chalkboard on the wall announces open bottles and special by-the-glass prices. Our waiter was knowledgeable and assisted us in selecting a terrific bottle of Italian Carmenere (Inama, Carmenere Piu, Veneto ‘06). The rich ripe fruit was exactly what we asked for and the finish was very smooth.
Now, I know that small plate dining is by definition casual and that plates often arrive when they are ready. However, I found this order particularly jarring: salad, appetizer, bread basket. I could excuse all of this had the food wowed me. Unfortunately, it didn’t. The scallops were cooked perfectly but they were salted beyond recognition. The skirt steak over a bed of arugula was cooked medium well per our request so this really saved the meal for us.
In summary, I enjoyed our dining experience at Barbrix, but not as much as I wanted to.
