After a week of heavy showers left Los Angeles drenched and humbled, the perfect storm gathered in Bacaro LA. With the 20 person table occupying half of the restaurant, health inspectors (performing a surprise and strictly routine inspection), patrons waiting to be seated, and CITYSIPPER editors all vying for their attention, owners Santos Uy and Daniel Kronfli handled the situation masterfully and ensured that all parties left satisfied.
Adding a touch of class (and gentrification) to an otherwise neglected neighborhood, Bacaro LA is a casual wine bar near USC. The setting is intimate with benches nestled neatly underneath a chalkboard wall which announces the wine list and wine specials. The wine list is comprised of small production international selections. After consulting Santos, we selected a Magliocco from Calabria with lush black fuit and a mouthy finish. The tapas style menu offers just as many delights. Our favorite was a pan seared scallop dish with brussel sprouts and bacon and a balsamic vinegar sauce. The open faced bacaro burger and the hanger steak bites were also fantastic.
For a refreshing change of pace, head on down to Trojan territory and enjoy the casual charms of Bacaro LA.
The Scene: The young and the young at heart clamor for seats at this college town wine bar.
Inclusion worthy notes: The first Sunday of every month is Beefsteak Sunday with unlimited steak, wine, and beer for $25. Check the website to confirm dates and events.

Great article/review! I was actually there on the same night (I think)…there was a huge table of college students drinking all night – great for them, but we had to wait a while, which we did. It was worth the wait though, we just grabbed a space at the little bar in the back and sipped on some wine until we could get a seat. It was about a 20 minute wait. The wine selection was grest and I LOVE the chalkboard wall with all the selections. The small plates offered a great value too. My only suggestion would to make the restaurant seating bigger…it seemed that there was ALOT of wasted space where the bar area was where more people could have sit like us and / or build an actual working bar where people can sit and eat at the bar like most restaurants. Overall though, we had a great time and the food, wine and ambience was worth the trek to downtown area. We’ll be back for sure.
